Uhaul and crappy, unreliable, even dangerous rental trucks!

Uhaul rental trucks suck

This is a picture of a similar 24 foot Uhaul rental truck.

I rented a U-Haul truck to go from Binghamton New York to Ithaca New York. I only needed to remove about one bedrooms worth of stuff, but all they had available was a four-bedroom mover which was a 24 foot truck. Being that I was moving from Binghamton, which is like the armpit of the United States and a very tiny city without a whole lot that goes on there, there wasn’t much else to choose from in competing companies for truck rentals.

The price of $159 didn’t seem to be too bad and they gave me the keys without even showing me the truck.   They told me the truck was behind the building – definitely not the best of customer service – I’ll tell you that. So I found the truck and it looked like a 25-year-old piece of crap from hell. By the time I got back to the office they were closed. So I got the truck started and as I put it into first gear it wouldn’t catch. The truck’s first gear did not work. So I put it into second gear and it caught but then died.

I was finally able to get it to leave the Uhaul lot by being very careful about how much gas I applied. Once you got it up to speed it wasn’t too bad, but I had to remember there was no first gear. But then I came to a red light and found out that was not the only problem. The brakes locked up and would skid. So to avoid skidding I had to pump the brakes and allow for a much greater stopping distance than normal.

This could easily have been me that day as Uhaul definitely did not do any maintanance to that vehicle! God was on my side that day!

So I finally got the truck to my apartment in Binghamton and loaded it up with probably a half of a bedrooms worth of furniture and stuff. And so I left headed towards Ithaca New York. What I didn’t realize then was that with the hills and the turns and curves involved in going to Ithaca I was in for a nightmare of a trip. Just try driving a 24 foot box Uhaul truck with brakes that lock up and no first gear through the hills in Ithaca.

Remember, there is a slogan that Ithaca is gorges – that is no joke. There are signs warning about the downgrades in the fact that trucks can lose their brakes or they can lock up from the heat. Now try doing that with no first gear and brakes that automatically lock up anyway. I don’t know how I did it. I don’t know how I made it. And somehow I even made it back to Binghamton to drop off the truck as I couldn’t get a one-way rental from Uhaul for whatever reason.

I am lucky to be alive and I’m lucky I didn’t end up in a horrible car accident. God must’ve been watching me that day – because Uhaul certainly wasn’t. When I returned the truck they were closed so I left the keys in the deposit box along with a note explaining how horrible that Uhaul rental truck was and that I was probably never going to use Uhaul ever again after that experience. To this day I have yet to hear any response from U-Haul. In my opinion do not use U-Haul as their rental vehicles are not only crappy and unreliable – they are dangerous!

NOTE — This comment is obviously written by an employee of U-Haul Truck Rental as you can see in the text. — NOTE

I work for U-Haul at their maintenance facility hub near Phoenix Arizona. Every vehicle owned by U-Haul is on a specific maintenance program that meets or exceeds those required by the manufacturer. I believe that you have made this up about the 24 foot box truck with out first gear working and with brakes locking up. There is no way on earth that you could have driven a vehicle like that in a hilly area like that. You would never even have gotten out of the parking lot.

I am a mechanic for U-Haul and have been for over 15 years and I can verify and guarantee that we have the best rental vehicle fleet on the road. U-Haul is superior in every way to Budget truck rental and Penske truck rental. Maybe you made a mistake and forgot that you actually rented your truck from Budget truck rental – they have bad maintenance programs and issues.

When you see a rental truck stuck and broke down on the side of the road is almost always a Budget truck. They don’t routinely maintain their vehicles and I know this because I used to work for them before I went to work for U-Haul. I quit because they were always trying to do she things and skip wherever possible. I couldn’t deal with that and the fact that these trucks of Budget were unsafe and even dangerous to drive.

You should go back and find your receipts and when you find that it says Budget truck rental on top and not U-Haul, then please do everyone a favor and change this complaint to read correctly that budget truck rental is the actual offender and not U-Haul. Thank you.

I would like to say that I have had horrible experiences with UHaul!! Not only do they have poor customer service, but they have crappy trucks. I rented a 24 ft. truck as well and it had 348,000 miles on it!! I have never seen any car or truck with this amount of miles on it. The truck was so bouncy it was like riding a horse. Uhaul needs to buy new trucks when they become this old. There was no acceleration and I didn’t feel safe at all!! Do yourself a favor and don’t rent from uhaul!!

Having used U-Haul trucks in the past, I have found them to be reliable. Some do not look great and some sound like the engine has seen its better days. But fact is the trucks do get the job done and in pricing out rentals, I have found U-Haul prices to be excellent.

I had the…unfortunate luck/need to drive one of these things when helping a friend move. The saving grace was we started this at 8pm on a week night. Minimal traffic reduced the need for the brakes which were completely shot.
