Hoover SteamVac Widepath review – is this a good steam cleaner or is it crap?

Hoover SteamVac Widepath review

I bought a Hoover SteamVac Widepath and it didn't work very well at all for me. Some friends introduced me to the Rug Doctor and it was so much better then the Hoover! I sold my Hoover and got a Rug Doctor!

I have several dogs and a young son so there are always messes around my house and having a good and effective steam cleaner is a necessity. From cleaning up everything from spilled milk and juice to messes from the dogs to who knows what – I always feel like I’m cleaning up messes in our house.

We used to have a rug and steam cleaning service do this for us but due to the bad economy would decide to save some cash and do it ourselves. So I did some research and bought the Hoover SteamVac Widepath which had the most rotating brushes of any steam cleaner I could find at Wal-Mart.

It also had this Clean Surge feature which allows you to spray an additional steam cleaning solution on problem areas and tough spills and stains. It seemed pretty well built and easy to use so this factored into why I bought this steam cleaner also. I also like the Hoover name as my mother still has a vacuum cleaner from them that must be 30 years old and works great.

Another factor why I bought this steam cleaner was the powered hand tool that has two rotating brushes in it. Most steam cleaners do not have a powered hand tool attachment. Not even the far more expensive Rug Doctor has a powered hand tool attachment.

So I got the steam cleaner home and put it to use. Right away I noticed that its ability to clean was not that good. I found that I was going over stains and spills 14 or 15 times with the Hoover steam cleaner and they were not coming up completely clean. They would get better each time to a point but then they wouldn’t get any better beyond that.

I could spray the areas with additional cleaning solution and it didn’t matter. They didn’t get any cleaner or any better. In my opinion this Hoover SteamVac Widepath steam cleaner is only for very light use and that’s it. It isn’t very good at pulling stains and spills out of the carpet.

We actually had some friends over from down the street and they asked us if we steam cleaned our carpet or not. I told them yes and showed them the Hoover steam cleaner we had bought. They laughed and told us that was a mistake and then they brought over their Rug Doctor steam cleaning machine.

The Rug Doctor was this big blue machine and it was noisier, but I must admit that difference was unbelievable. With one pass the Rug Doctor got out all the stains and spills that the Hoover SteamVac had left behind. That was incredible. I ended up selling the Hoover on the local Baltimore Maryland Craigslist and then bought a Rug Doctor.

Steam cleaning is now so much easier and effective with the Rug Doctor.  Cleaning up around the house now is almost a joy and our rugs are now spotless.  We don’t have to worry about the kids and dogs making messes and her carpets looking ugly anymore.
